What makes JL Dental Hygiene different?

Are dental hygienists allowed to work without a dentist?

Yes! In Alberta, Registered Dental Hygienists are licensed to provide care independently. Which means JL Dental Hygiene can offer preventative and periodontal services without requiring a dentist on-site. This allows patients to access high-quality oral care directly, with a focus on comfort, education, and long-term wellness.

Do I still need to see a dentist?

Yes. Dental hygienists focus on preventive oral healthcare, while dentists diagnose and treat conditions requiring restorative or surgical care. If we identify concerns during your visit, we'll recommend an appropriate referral.

What if I have a cavity?

If a cavity or any dental concern is identified during your dental hygiene appointment, we will refer you to your dentist for further diagnosis and treatment. If you do not have a dentist, we can help connect you with trusted local dentists.

Do you take dental x-rays?

Yes — Registered Dental Hygienists in Alberta are fully certified and trained to take x-rays and diagnose cavities. At JL Dental Hygiene, we take intraoral x-rays to support accurate assessment and diagnosis of hygiene-related conditions.

Why do I need dental X-rays? Are they safe?

X-rays allow us to detect cavities, bone loss, infections, and other conditions that cannot be seen during a visual examination. And yes, digital x-rays are safe as it uses very low levels of radiation, and they are only taken when clinically necessary.

APPOINTMENTS

What happens during my first appointment?

Your first visit includes a comprehensive dental hygiene assessment, oral cancer screening, periodontal (gum) evaluation, and a personalized treatment plan. If time allows and it is clinically appropriate, your cleaning may also be completed during the same appointment.

How long does an appointment take?

Appointment times vary depending on your oral health needs and the services being provided. For most adult patients, new patient appointment is typically around 60-90 minutes.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

Every patient is different. While many people benefit from cleanings every 6 months, others may require appointments every 3 or 4 months depending on their gum health, medical history, and risk factors.

Will my cleaning hurt?

Most cleanings are comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth, inflamed gums, or significant tartar buildup, you may experience some temporary sensitivity. Your comfort is always a priority, and treatment can be adjusted as needed.

What if I haven’t had a cleaning in years?

That's okay! You're not alone. We'll assess your oral health without judgment and work with you to develop a treatment plan that's appropriate for your needs. We will help guide you on your journey towards better oral health!

INSURANCE & PAYMENT

Do you accept insurance?

Yes! We accept and direct bill most dental insurance plans. We can check you coverage, help you understand your benefits, and submit claims on your behalf.

Do you accept the Canadian Dental Care plan (CDCP)?

Yes. We accept eligible patients covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Coverage varies depending on your individual plan and eligibility.

Will my insurance cover everything?

Coverage varies depending on your insurance plan. Any remaining balance not covered by insurance is the patient's responsibility. For estimates, feel free to contact us and we’ll be happy to help you understand what you appointment may cost and what you insurance may cover.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept major credit cards, debit, and other approved payment methods.

TEETH WHITENING

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes. Professional whitening is considered safe when performed under the supervision of a dental professional and after determining you are a suitable candidate.

How long do whitening results last?

Results vary depending on your diet, lifestyle, and oral hygiene habits. Many patients enjoy their results for several months to a few years with proper maintenance.

Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?

Some patients experience temporary sensitivity, which usually resolves within a day or two after treatment.

Can everyone have their teeth whitened?

Not always. We'll complete a screening to determine whether whitening is appropriate and safe for you.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. This allows us to offer the appointment to another patient.

Is there parking available?

Yes, there is free parking available for our patients. Parking instructions will be provided prior to your visit.
